How is this different than a moblog or online album?
Fotochatter is about instantly sharing your pictures with all your friends. It's not really about archival or presentation. Your photos on fotochatter don't stay around forever... After all, fotochatting is about letting your friends in on the MOMENT and seeing what they have to say right then; it's not an autobiography in pictures.
What is the difference between my public gallery and my chatter?
Your public gallery consists of photos that will show up on your profile. Anyone will be able to see these photos, and you can use the gallery sort of as a preview of the types of photos that will be in your chatter. On the other hand, your chatter may or may not be viewable to everyone (depending on your privacy settings.)
Do I have to send photos to all my friends, or can I pick just one?
You can easily send photos to all of your friends or just one. To send to all of your friends, just add a photo to your chatter by uploading it or emailing it in to your secret posting address. To send a photo to a particular person, just email <their username>@fotochatter.com. The photo will go directly to their phone and be available in their fotochatter inbox, but not be viewable by anyone else.
Why do you want my mobile number?
Most of the fun of fotochatter is being able to instantly see and respond to the photos that your friends post, as well as reading their responses to you. We achieve this by using text messages, and that's why we need your number. Don't worry, we aren't gonna sell it or call you at 3AM for a ride home.
Why am I not getting my text messages?
That's a good question. There could be any number of reasons. We send the text messages by using your number and carrier to construct an email address. Most carriers provide this feature. So for example, if your number is 3105551212 and your carrier is t-mobile, then your address would be 3105551212@tmomail.net . If you are not getting your messages, you may have selected the wrong carrier, typed in your number wrong (don't include the country code - so don't include the "1" for U.S. numbers for example), or your carrier may have an alternative method of supporting emails. You can always call them and find the email address for your phone. Another way to find out is to try sending a photo from your phone to your own email address. The "from" address will be your email-to-SMS address. Once you know it, you can just type it into the "alternate mobile email address" field.
How do I turn the text messages off?
If you don't want to get messages from fotochatter, shame on you! That being said you can turn them off pretty easily. To turn off the messages completely, or just set them at a different level, just go to the "settings" section. Once you are there, click on "notification settings". From there you can set your notification level to be as high or as low as you want. To disable the messages you get when a particular friend adds new photos, go to "my friends". Next to each friend you will see a "notification options" link. You can turn off messages from there on a friend-by-friend basis. You can also do all of this from your phone of course.
Ok, so what's a mobile access code? How is it different then my screen name?
Your mobile access code is basically your mobile password for the service. Your screen name will be visible to others when you make comments or share photos, while your mobile access code is private. You will use the mobile access code to post pictures and connect to the service from your phone.
How do I add photos?
You can either upload them from the upload page under "my chatter" or email them in from your mobile phone. To email them you just send the photos to <your_mobile_access_code>@ fcpost.net . You should add that address to your address book, it makes things much easier. Obviously, emailing them in is preferred since this is all about MOBILE image sharing. Come on get out from behind that PC and get outside!
Who will see my photos?
ALL of your friends will be notified that your photo has been posted (as long as they have notifications turned on for you). They will also see your photo posting on their "what's new" page and be able to see your photos. If you have your chatter privacy setting set to "everyone", then your photo will be publicly viewable, otherwise, it's friends only.
Who can comment on my photos?
Any one who can see your photo can comment on it. So if only your friends have access to your chatter, then only they can make a comment. You can delete comments on your own photos if they cross the line. What kind of friends do you have, anyways?
How do I save photos to my phone ?
Every photo on fotochatter has a "save to phone" link. Simply click on that and you will receive a text message with a photo download link. From there, you click on the link, and use your phone's browser to save the photo to your phone.
How do I get fotochatter on my phone?
You can use fotochatter on your phone in two ways. You can either use the Java application, or the WAP site. In order to use the Java application, you will need to have a phone that runs Java (sorry Verizon people) and an active data connection. If you don't have data service, you can call your carrier and take care of that. If your phone won't run the Java app, you should use the WAP site. You can find the download locations for both of these things on the "using fc on my phone" link in the top menu. Click here for more info on this topic.
What's the difference between using WAP and using the Java application?
WAP is more widely supported but the Java app is a bit cooler (at least that's what we think). With the Java app, aside from viewing photos and commenting, you can edit settings, invite friends, manage subscription options, and do a bunch of other cool stuff. WAP is more focused on viewing photos and commenting only. If you do use WAP make sure to save the address in your bookmarks or favorites so that you don't need to type it in every time.
I'm having trouble with the Java app, what gives?
That's a loaded question. There are a lot of phones, and they don't all run Java the same (much to our chagrin). We have done a lot of testing, so it should work on *almost* all phones that run Java. Probably the most common problem is with the HTTP connection. Some carriers, like t-mobile, will allow WAP access but not a direct HTTP connection for a Java app. So if you can't get it working, email us about your problem (see email address below) and try the WAP site. It's pretty cool!
How do I invite friends?
You just go to the "invite friends" link under "my friends". You can also invite other users to be your friend directly from their profiles. Whew, that was an easy one!
How do I remove friends?
Next to each friend on the "my friends" page there is a "remove friend" link. You just click the link and that pesky not-my-friend-anymore person is gone.
